1. Introduction

Since its inception in 1968, the IB exams have seen steady growth, culminating in nearly 200,000 students taking the exam in May 2024. This year’s global average score saw a slight uptick to 30.32, up from 30.24 in 2023. While the overall pass rate increased to 80%, these marginal improvements reflect significant changes in the performance of thousands of students worldwide.

The IB program is designed to foster a love for learning through a diverse set of subjects, allowing students to tailor their academic journey. Despite this flexibility, one subject remains a constant requirement: Mathematics. The Mathematics component is divided into two main branches: Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL), each offering two pathways – Analysis & Approaches (AA) and Applications & Interpretation (AI). For the purpose of this guide, the focus will be on AA HL and AA SL, as they are the most relevant in terms of student enrolment and examination trends.

2. Evolving Expectations

The IB exam structure is constantly updated to better prepare students for future challenges. Increasingly, questions focus not just on conceptual understanding but on the application of those concepts to real-world problems. For example, a 2023 SL AA exam question about sampling methods no longer tests students solely on definitions but pushes them to apply their knowledge to practical situations, as demonstrated below, taken from the Oct/Nov 2023, Paper 1, SL AA:

Sampling methods have been a staple in assessments for years. Historically, questions primarily tested students’ ability to define sampling terms. However, exams have shifted focus, challenging students to apply their understanding to practical, real-world scenarios. Post-pandemic, the scope of IB exams has evolved, demanding a more sophisticated application of core skills across various contexts. This shift encourages students to move beyond rote memorization, promoting a deeper level of critical thinking.

For instance, consider the example below:

The answer to these questions are in this order:

In this case, quota sampling is introduced. Quota sampling is a non-probability method that involves selecting a predetermined number or proportion of units, without relying on random selection.

The progression of this question illustrates how exams are designed to ensure that students grasp key concepts, rather than relying on template responses. Although core topics such as Trigonometry, Differentiation, Integration, and Probability Distributions will still dominate most exams (comprising 70-80% of the content), this does not diminish the importance of other foundational topics. These serve as the building blocks for more complex concepts and remain integral to a well-rounded mathematical understanding.

Traditional methods of practice remain essential for mastering these core topics. However, with the increasing emphasis on real-life applications, future test papers may eventually feature an equal balance of practical scenarios and fundamental mathematical concepts.

3. Difficulty Level Overview

In the IB Mathematics syllabus, there are a few core topics that are consistently tested with great emphasis. These include:

  • Functions
  • Trigonometry
  • Differentiation
  • Integration
  • Probability Distributions

These topics are highly interconnected. For example, Functions often serve as the foundation for exploring other concepts. In the following May/June 2023 SL AA Paper 2 question, students are first asked to solve basic problems with functions before moving on to calculus-related tasks using a Graphing Display Calculator (GDC).

This example highlights the structured nature of IB questions, where one concept flows into the next. It begins with basic functions (Part a) and advances into testing calculus concepts, specifically derivatives (Parts b & c). From there, the question transitions into assessing students’ ability to use a Graphing Display Calculator (GDC) (Parts d through f), which ties back into their understanding of functions. While this particular question doesn’t cover trigonometry or integration, it serves as a great illustration of how IB exams interconnect different mathematical concepts for holistic assessment.

Typically, cross-topic questions like this appear in Section B of the exam, where questions are more comprehensive and demanding, while Section A tends to feature shorter, more straightforward questions. For SL AA students, this is the standard level of difficulty they should expect. For HL students, a similar question might appear earlier in the exam or be modified for Paper 1, which doesn’t allow calculator use. IB exams are designed to test not only mathematical understanding but also skills like time management and the ability to apply concepts strategically.

IB Mathematics demands a lot from students, blending mathematical theory with practical application. While the program is challenging, support is always available for students to help them navigate the workload and expectations.
